5 Tips for Replacing Carpet Yourself
October 6th, 2022
If you’ve been thinking about updating your home, you may have already considered replacing your carpets. Changing out your carpets is a relatively easy way to increase not only the value of your home but also its aesthetic. At Evergreen Home Buyers, we’ve replaced quite a few carpets in our day, meaning we’ve learned some tricks to make the job easier. So, here are 5 tips for replacing carpet yourself so you can update the look of your home and add value for prospective buyers.
1. Rent Proper Tools
Some DIYers mistakenly think they can install carpet using just their trusted pocketknife and rolling out the pieces over the floor. And although some standard tools are required, such as a hammer, utility stapler, and tin snips, you’ll also want to rent proper tools to get the job done correctly. These tools include a seam iron, power stretcher, and knee kicker and can typically be rented at your local hardware store.
2. Carpet Stretching
Now that you have the correct tools, you may want to jump right into the installation. However, learning how to stretch the carpet properly is an important part of carpet installation to avoid unsightly wrinkles and lumps quickly forming. In fact, proper stretching is 90% of good carpet installation, so you don’t want to get this wrong. Consider watching how-to videos on YouTube or ask an experienced friend to help you learn how to do it correctly.
3. Tack Strips
Tack strips are attached to the subfloor around the room’s perimeter to act as anchor points for the carpet. If you’re simply replacing the carpet, then you should be able to reuse your tack strips unless they’re damaged. However, if you’re installing carpet for the first time, you’ll need to install tack strips, being sure to leave extra space to tuck the edges of the carpet over the strips for a uniform finish.
4. Add 5-10%
Since you’ll be cutting the carpet to match the size of the room, you’ll want to consider waste when buying carpet. You don’t want to purchase too much and be left with tons of excess, but you also don’t want to purchase too little and run short. Therefore, the general rule of thumb when buying carpets is to add 5% of the carpet size for non-patterned carpets and 10% for patterned carpets.
5. Carpet Pile Direction
Obviously, if you choose a patterned carpet, you’ll need to carefully match the patterns between adjoining pieces for a seamless result. But did you know that for a non-patterned carpet, you can detect the direction of the carpet’s pile by examining it in strong light? Even professional installation teams can make mistakes with the carpet pile direction, so you’ll want to ensure consistency from piece to piece for the best results.
